Lost in Translation, or Ingenious Marketing of the 1930s
In 1931, Japanese entrepreneur Shojiro Ishibashi decided that the future belonged to cars. Prior to that, his family factory had successfully produced tabi, traditional Japanese shoes with rubber soles. After gaining experience with rubber, Shojiro took a risk and produced his first car tyres.
But how to promote a purely Japanese product in a world ruled by American and European brands? Ishibashi came up with an ingenious trick.
In Japanese, his surname Ishibashi literally translates as "Stone Bridge" (Ishi means stone, Bashi means bridge). Shōjiro simply translated his surname into English – Stone Bridge – and swapped the words for a better sound. This is how the Bridgestone brand was born.
The English-language name instantly erased the boundaries, and the world took the technological Japanese tires for "their own".
Why does the whole world trust Japanese technology?
The Japanese never copied someone else's - they took the technology and brought it to the absolute. It was the engineers from the Land of the Rising Sun who were the first in Asia to use nylon cord, revolutionizing the strength of tyres.
And when the world faced the problem of winter handling at the end of the twentieth century, the Japanese invented the legendary Blizzak line with a microporous rubber composition. This technology literally "absorbed" the water film from the ice, providing a sticky hook without the use of studs.
