Freed or Stepwgn for family: what to check in the salon before buying

It is more convenient to compare the Honda Freed and Stepwgn for family trips in terms of how people and things will fit in the car at the same time. A photo of a spacious cabin with the third row removed does not yet show where the stroller will fit when passengers are sitting in the back. And two separate seats in the second row and a sofa create a different fit even inside the same model.

When ordering a car from Japan to Irkutsk or another city in Siberia, these issues should be closed before buying. A distance inspection becomes much more useful if you know in advance what positions of the seats need to be shown and what to measure. For the first choice, it is enough to make a regular family route: who is traveling, in what seats and what luggage should go with them.

Describe a trip that is truly repetitive

You can start with an everyday situation: two adults, children in chairs, bags and a stroller. Then add the second scenario for which you need a minivan: a trip with relatives or a trip with suitcases. These are examples for a selection task, not an assumption about how each family uses the car.

If the third row is needed regularly, it should be looked at along with the remaining trunk. When it is rarely used, it is more important to check how the seats are retracted and what cargo opening remains. Both scenarios give clear requirements, and the expression “need a large family Honda” leaves too many options.

At Freed, check the second row and the position of the rear seats

The Japanese Freed of the second generation in versions with two separate seats in the second row has an aisle between them. The version with a sofa is arranged differently, so it is important to see the row itself in the photo, and not just the front panel. The composition of the seats and equipment must be confirmed according to the documents of the selected car.

In the three-row Freed of this generation, the rear seats are raised to the sides of the cabin. There is room for cargo, but the raised seats remain inside. For a stroller or a wide box, this is an important detail: the usable volume in the photo and the width between the seats are different things.

Such a device is shown in Honda’s Japanese materials for the version introduced in October 2019 and produced until May 2022. For a different phase or generation, the configuration should be checked separately. In particular, Freed+ cannot be selected as a three-row Freed only by a familiar name: it has a different cabin organization.

Therefore, for a particular car, you need at least a general view of the second row, a view of the third row in the working position and a trunk after folding one and both of its parts. It is appropriate to ask for a short video of the mechanism itself: it shows the actions and condition of the components better than a single good angle. At Stepwgn see the trunk with passenger seats

In the fifth-generation Stepwgn, the third row is separately retracted under the floor. Honda shows this design in the Japanese catalog of the January 2020 – April 2022 version. It provides a different way to free up space than the Freed seats raised to the sides, but in itself does not yet answer the question of whether the car is suitable for specific family luggage.

For comparison, it is worth asking for the same photos of both minivans: the rear seats are raised, one part is removed, the entire third row is removed. The shot should be taken with the rear door open so that the opening and floor are visible. Then the space in the same position of the seats is compared, and not the advertising cargo configuration of one car with the passenger configuration of the other.

Measure the stroller before choosing a lot

It is useful to write down the length, width and height of the folded stroller; the same can be done with the largest suitcase or other thing that regularly travels in the car. Then ask to measure the free space with the required number of passenger seats. This is how a verifiable question appears instead of the hope that everything will definitely fit into the minivan.

Not only the dimensions of the floor are needed. The door opening, protruding parts and the position of the seats can prevent the loading of an item that looks suitable on the trunk plan. If the measurement check remains doubtful, it is worth finding out before buying, and not writing down the assumption as a confirmed result.

With child seats, the same objective approach is needed: the model of the seat and the permissible method of installation are checked with the instructions of the seat and the car for the selected seat. A photo of the fasteners helps to ask questions during the check, but does not confirm the compatibility of any child seat. The passage to the third row should also be evaluated taking into account the installed seats, and not only by an empty cabin.

What shots to ask for during the inspection

The practical set consists of several related views: the entire cabin through the sliding door, the second row and its guides, the passage back, the third row, the trunk in the right positions of the seats and close-ups of noticeable wear. A short video should show the movement and fixation of the seats, as well as the operation of the doors, if an electric drive is included in the requirements for the car.

The frames should be associated with one copy: the year, version and lot data. The catalog photo explains the design well, and the inspection answers the question about the condition and configuration of the selected car. These materials complement each other, so you should not replace one with another when making a final choice.

For trips where the back row is constantly occupied, the combination of seating and remaining trunk will be the decisive check. With the infrequent use of the third row, the focus will shift to folding the seats and loading. Freed and Stepwgn have different ways of organizing space, and useful choices come from these daily tasks, without a universal winner.
